Why is it that the way you speak at work isn’t landing with your audience?

    • You ramble
    • You focus on the feature sets, rather than the benefits
    • You struggle to tell a story

In my twenties, I hated that I couldn’t sound coherent whenever more senior colleagues asked me questions that I wasn’t expecting.

It made me afraid to speak up.

That’s why I spent years studying how great speakers communicate. And in this video, I came up with a 3-step formula that helps me communicate in a way that can hook anyone.

    PAP

It stands for PROBLEM / AGGRAVATION / PAYOFF. You can check out my video above and this example below to see it in action:

    • ProblemFor the longest time, our ROI per dollar in advertising flatlined around 10%.
    • Aggravation: We tried every conceivable method to improve our metric – switching up copy, changing visuals, running promotions at different times, testing different platforms – but nothing seemed to be working. If anything, our tactics declined our ROI
    •  PayoffIt wasn’t until we realized that we were running our split tests all wrong. We weren’t isolating each variable in a given test. Once we did this, we finally realized what the bottleneck actually was.

Remember: the key to telling a great story is to leave unanswered questions in your audience's minds.
