The Framework That Helped Me Command Respect From Anyone
Read Time: 1 Minute
Ever wonder why your meetings are wastes of time?
It's not just your meetings. Everyone I've ever met has experienced this problem.
There's miscommunication. "Wires get crossed." People get upset. Work doesn't get done.
And by the end of the meeting, you're like, "What the hell did we even accomplish?"
Fortunately, there's often a common cause.
You don't understand each other.
You think you understand each other. But by the time one person is answering a question, the one who asked is instead thinking about what to say next.
It's completely unintentional. But it's unproductive.
And it's hurting your ability to command respect from your colleagues, executives, customers, and partners.
Want to turn it around?
Become a better listener.
But that's way easier said than done.
So over the past 3 years, I refined and experimented with a framework to become a better listener at work.
It's worked better than I would have ever thought. It's a crucial reason why I was promoted to a Director of Business Development this year. It's changed how I approach partnerships and business development. It's changed my teaching approach.
The video above breaks down my listening framework in 3 simple steps. I highly recommend watching it so you can get the nuances and hear examples. Below is a quick summary:
PHILOSOPHY: LISTEN TO UNDERSTAND, NOT TO SPEAK.
PART 1: Pause
- Nod your head for at least 3 seconds, looking up rather than down.
PART 2: Paraphrase
- Summarize the main point of the other person in 1-2 sentences. Don't copy them word-for-word. Most importantly, confirm that you've understood them BEFORE answering their question or making your point.
PART 3: Search For Intent
- Ask open-ended questions that get the other person to elaborate on their intent behind the question.
- By understanding the heart of their question, your answer will be more relevant.
