Interview Medium question

Tell me about a time you failed.

CARL Challenge, Action, Result, Learning

Why this one. The classic. Most people never reach the result, which is the only part that gets you hired.

  • C

    Challenge

The scene and the problem, together.

Where you were and what was on you. Two sentences maximum.

  • A

    Action

What you chose to do, and why.

Say "I" not "we". The why is what separates you from everyone else.

  • R

    Result

    The outcome, out loud.

A number if you have one. Something that changed if you do not.

  • L

    Learning

    What you do differently now.

This is the step STAR is missing. It is what makes you sound senior.

One line per step. Not a script to memorise, a shape to copy.

Challenge

I ran a product launch for a tool aimed at operations teams, and I owned the go-to-market and the first ninety days of adoption.

Action

I built the entire campaign around a persona I had never actually interviewed, because I was sure I knew the buyer from a previous role.

Result

We hit eleven percent of the signup target.

Learning

I now do six customer calls before I write a line of positioning. My last launch beat target by forty percent.
